Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is from the fourth generation of Roberts family to have lived in Atlanta. This began with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts who was a farm. The Robertses' father was interested in theater from a young age. He acted on the Emory University campus in 1952 and in other productions around Atlanta. While stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he was commissioned into the airforce in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was also in the production. They got married in 1955. Their first child, Eric Anthony, was born in 1956. The couple divorced in 1957. the Air Force and Walter began his studies at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. In 1960, the family relocated to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working with Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local Saturday morning children's television program Bum Bum and His Buddies and their Buddies, which they both funded. In the following year, they established The Actors and Writers Workshop which ran for six years. They welcomed in 1965 two more children into their lives: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
